Not a Lockdown - Day 4
It’s like a parade of pedestrians out there. Plus their dogs. Their kids. And they all seem happy to see us. They must be the people overjoyed to be at home, not doing a 1.5 hr commute each way into the city during rush hour.
Several have stopped at our little library. It’s half empty and I have to add about 10 Nat Geos and some books. “Don’t you take my books without asking me,” says Gretchen.
Governor Newsom has put the whole state in Shelter in Place — still not a lockdown. But he knows he can’t be enforced. So does the chief of police of LA who flat out says they will not be arresting anyone for violating the order. Okay, says the governor, but can we still deal with Asians who are getting beat up because dummies think they are spreading COVID-19? I’m pretty sure he means to rescue the Asians from racist acts, not join in on the beating.
A report on Mexico’s problem on NPR has a Mexican saying how few Mexicans are being tested. We’ve had as many COVI-19 cases in the country as the city of San Diego. The NPR person asks how bad is it over there and has to be told, yes, people are dying in Mexico, too.
The governor’s order doesn’t clear journalists so I follow the local order for Marin, which is more to my benefit, declaring me essential. On the way to the office, there’s still too many cars on the road. People are not taking this seriously.
The governor declared the Shelter in Place on Twitter. It was quickly followed by “Who does this guy think he is, a king??” And f**k this and f**k that. An overwhelmingly negative reaction, IMO. But I understand people don’t like their freedoms taken from them. The governor had also made the mistake of saying 56% of California’s population, about 20 million people, will get the Coronavirus. He was using a worst case simulation in an attempt to get our president to dock a hospital ship in LA’s harbor. That did not go over so well.
