To be just a touch more serious, your points on the expectations are very very accurate.

In addition, events like this are never completely paid for - there are plenty of extra expenses that come from being out of pocket and on the run. But those are minor points compared to opportunity costs.

The fact is that being at an event such as this - even if you get travel and lodging - costs a ton of money in the form of paid work that is not getting done. The obligatory reporting you outline above doesn't make the house payment. Other work does. The opportunity cost is the largest cost and the CAD company doesn't pay it, ... you do.
